Episode 120: Art Museum Piece

In Which: Alex and Justin get up to art museum hijinx involving school assignments, paintings coming to life, a macaroni necklace...and Alex apologizing to Justin.

JALEXCAP
First Jalex scene occurs right after the opening credits. Alex and Max are in the lair, chatting up Babe Ruth--Alex cast a spell on an old Babe Ruth picture to bring him to life. Justin does not approve.
Justin: Alex, put him back in the picture before Dad gets here!
Alex: Lighten up! If he was Obi Wan Kenobi, you'd be all into it.
Justin: A lifesize Obi Wan? I'll be right back.
Before Justin can leave, Jerry shows up and orders Alex to put Babe Ruth back in the picture.

Alex starts to chant the spell but then can't remember the rest of it.
Jerry: You need to know the exact time and place to finish the spell.
Alex: I need to know stuff? Justin's department!!
Justin [smugly]: Yankee Stadium, 1929.
Alex: Wow. You even make sports not sound cool.

Alex successfully sends Babe Ruth back into the picture and Jerry starts the day's lesson--"Go Through, Mow Through," enchanting a solid object so that it can pass through another solid object. Justin goes first and charms Jerry's hockey stick so that Jerry can poke it into and out of Max's body. Max protests that it tickles, so Alex jumps up, takes the hockey stick, and gleefully pokes Justin with it.

Then she goes after Jerry with the stick, and the camera cuts back to show a really unnecessary reaction shot from Justin.

I guess the editors liked the way he was looking at Alex.

At school, Alex's art teacher Miss Marinovich tells her that she has to go on a field trip to the art museum. Alex declines, but seems worried when Miss Marinovich says that it'll be worth 30% of her grade. Justin comes gliding through the classroom door in time to promise Miss Marinovich that he'll make Alex go on the field trip. Miss Marinovich leaves and Justin grins at Alex, who still says she's not going to go.

On the day of the field trip, Justin, Miss Marinovich and all of the other students are gathered at the museum. Alex saunters in and greets Miss Marinovich and then greets Justin as "Mr. Kiss-up-ovich."

Justin glares at her as she tells Miss Marinovich that she is going to go wander around the museum. Miss Marinovich doesn't care what she does, as long as she passes the class. While Justin is busy passing out the assignments to the other students, Alex casts the "Go Through, Mow Through" spell on herself so that she can leave the museum by stepping through one of the walls. Justin goes looking for Alex and quickly realizes that she's escaped.

Alex spends the rest of the day selling homemade jewlery with Harper. She returns to the museum just as the other students are turning in their assignments ("Next time, don't use red pen," Justin tells one of them, "I use red pen when I grade--it's kind of why I became a teacher's assistant."). Justin sees Alex come through the wall and accuses her of ditching the field trip. Then he hands her the worksheet and smugly tells her that the museum is closing in five minutes.

After Justin leaves, Alex has the brilliant idea to bring the paintings to life so that they can help her with the assignment (which is to identify historical facts about each painting). It backfires when the paintings don't want to cooperate with her. Then before Alex can reverse the spell, she realizes that they've been locked in the museum together--and Elaine the security guard is on the prowl.

Alex calls--who else?--Justin to come help her. Justin rushes to the museum and gets past Elaine ("You're not an art thief, are you?" she asks him) by pretending to have left his sweater inside. Once Elaine's gone, Justin worriedly calls Alex's name. Alex and the paintings come out of hiding. Justin, as anyone could predict, freaks out.

Alex begs him to send the paintings back to normal, but Justin says (in a genuinely concerned way), "But then you wouldn't learn anything. You've gotta do this yourself."

Alex manages to put most of the paintings back the way they were, but she runs into problems with the Mona Lisa.

Justin: Okay, the Mona Lisa, and she was painted by Leonardo...
Alex: DiCaprio!
Justin: Da Vinci! DA VINCI!
When Justin tries to perform the spell himself, the Mona Lisa pleads to be allowed to stay, since she feels unappreciated by the people who come to visit the museum.

Of course, Harper chooses this moment to show up (she followed Justin after hearing him get the phone call from Alex). She comments on how familiar Mona Lisa seems. Alex says that "Mona" isn't from here--she's from Florence. Justin smiles and praises Alex, who beams happily.

When Mona says how much she loves Harper's necklace, Alex gets an idea--she takes the necklace from Harper and lets Mona try it on. Then she sends Harper to find some matching earrings. When Harper leaves, Alex points her wand at the now-happy Mona and sends her back into the painting. Harper returns and complains that Mona left without paying for the necklace. After Harper leaves again, Justin freaks out that now the Mona Lisa is wearing a tacky necklace. Alex asks him to just be cool with it since it made Mona so happy, and Justin reluctantly agrees. Then Alex does something shocking:
Alex: I'm sorry that I make fun of you for knowing stuff.
Justin: You're apologizing? Will you say that tomorrow at school in front of a bunch of my friends?
Alex: No.
Justin: Didn't think so.

They leave the museum and show up during the end credits, where, back at home, Jerry, Max and Theresa want to show off how they've charmed Theresa with the "Go Through, Mow Through" spell so that she can walk through doors. The spell wears off and Theresa smacks her head on the door instead.
